Is Manulife Vitality worth it?
A BC broker does the math on the premium savings, the rewards and the monthly fee, and tells you who should skip it.
The short answer
Vitality Plus is worth it if you already move most days, or are willing to start, and you will actually use at least one of the rewards. It is not worth it if you want a policy you never think about. Here is how the numbers work so you can decide for yourself.
What you are paying for
Every Manulife life insurance policy comes with Vitality Go for free: the app, the points, basic partner discounts, no premium savings. Vitality Plus is an optional add-on with a small monthly fee. Plus is where the premium discount and the bigger rewards live. The fee depends on your policy; I quote it alongside the premium so you see both numbers together.
The premium savings, year by year
Plus gives you 10% off your premium in year one before you have earned a single point. From year two the discount follows the status you earned the previous year, compared with the same Manulife policy without Vitality Plus.
| Status | Points needed | Discount from year 2 | On a $100/month premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 0 | 0% | $100 |
| Silver | 3,500 | 2% | $98 |
| Gold | 7,000 | 10% | $90 |
| Platinum | 10,000 | 15% | $85 |
On a $100 monthly premium, Platinum saves $180 a year, Gold $120, Silver $24. The bigger the policy, the bigger the dollar saving: a $300 premium at Platinum saves $540 a year.
The rewards on top
The premium discount is only part of it. Members who use the program collect rewards worth, by our estimate for this site, about $819 a year at Bronze up to $1,736 at Platinum, using the assumptions footnoted on the home page tier table. The main pieces:
- Apple Watch SE 3 for $0 when you hit 500 points a month for 24 months (see how the Apple Watch deal works)
- Expedia: 10% off at Bronze rising to 50% off at Platinum, up to $500 a year
- adidas: 15% to 30% off by status
- GoodLife Fitness: 25% off membership
- HelloFresh: $20 at Silver, $45 at Gold, a free box at Platinum
- Free annual ExamOne health screen (about $120 value)
- $99 Amazon gift code at Platinum after three consecutive years of completing the Vitality Health Review
Count only the rewards you would really use. If you never fly and never buy sportswear, do not count Expedia and adidas.
How hard is Platinum, really?
You need 10,000 points in a year, and there are more than 18,000 available. A typical Platinum year looks like this:
| Activity | Points |
|---|---|
| Physical activity (steps, workouts, heart-rate minutes) | up to 6,000 |
| Vitality Check (full health screen) | 4,500 |
| Non-smoker declaration | 1,000 |
| Preventative health checks | 1,000 |
| Weekly goals check-in | 1,040 |
| Vitality Health Review | 500 |
Many active clients reach Platinum without the Vitality Check at all. Dan, a BC Realtor and one of my clients, has hit Platinum every year with a mix of workouts and the annual review. If you work out four or more times a week, Gold to Platinum is realistic in year one.
Who should skip Plus
- You will not wear a tracker or open the app. Bronze gets you no discount from year two, so you would pay the fee for nothing.
- You want the absolute cheapest term premium and nothing else. Compare the plain policy; sometimes it wins.
- You live outside British Columbia or Ontario. I am licensed in BC and Ontario and can point you to a broker in your province.
The honest bottom line
For an active person, the year-two discount alone usually covers the Plus fee, and the Apple Watch, Expedia and GoodLife rewards are on top. For a sedentary person who will not change, Go is the better choice. The way to know is to see the quote both ways, with and without Plus, for your age and coverage. That is what I prepare before every call.
